Delivering Mechanical and Electrical Infrastructure Across Two Live Food Production Sites

Owben supported a leading UK food manufacturer through a major factory expansion programme, following the acquisition of an additional manufacturing facility.

The work involved mechanical and electrical infrastructure upgrades across two production sites, preparing both for new production lines, automation and future growth. Both sites stayed in production throughout, so the priority was to deliver safely, efficiently and with minimal disruption.

The Challenge

The client needed significant infrastructure upgrades while its food production facilities remained fully operational.

New utilities had to be integrated with existing services, and mechanical and electrical works had to be coordinated across multiple areas. All of it had to run to programme without affecting output.

Key challenges included:

  • Integrating new utilities with existing services

  • Working safely within live food production environments

  • Coordinating mechanical and electrical works across multiple areas

  • Delivering to programme without impacting production

Our Approach

Owben worked closely with the client and the wider project team, with detailed planning completed before any installation began.

Our approach included:

  • Detailed planning ahead of installation

  • Close coordination with production and site teams

  • Safe working practices throughout

  • Full testing, commissioning and project documentation

The Solution

Owben delivered a complete package of mechanical and electrical works to prepare both facilities for increased production capacity.

Mechanical infrastructure:

  • 400m compressed air distribution system

  • 385m stainless steel water distribution network

  • Installation of valves, fittings and distribution points

  • Fabrication and installation of support systems

Electrical infrastructure:

  • Distribution boards and power infrastructure

  • Cable ladder and containment systems

  • SWA cabling and earthing

  • Infrastructure supporting automated palletising systems

  • Testing, commissioning and certification

“Owben provided the infrastructure needed to support our continued investment in production capacity, delivering mechanical and electrical works safely, efficiently and with minimal disruption to our operations.”

The Impact

The completed infrastructure gives the client a strong platform for continued growth:

  • Reliable compressed air and water distribution across production areas

  • Electrical infrastructure ready for new automated production equipment

  • Increased production capability and capacity for future expansion

  • Safe, compliant and scalable installations

  • Minimal disruption to ongoing manufacturing throughout
